Project #2
Or, Sculptural Peyote around a Focal Bead
As I very vaguely recall, we actually covered two projects in Gail's peyote beadweaving class--the major one was of course the pi necklace, which in my case was finished long after class. But I think we may have had a smaller, more sculptural project suggested as well. At any rate, I certainly made this stickpin at about the same time.
I especially liked twisting the rows of the bugle beads (see right); and by using larger glass beads, the peyote very naturally cupped out. This is one of those projects that worked very naturally and easily, without a lot of false starts or head scratching (or hair pulling); it therefore has a special place in my heart. I've heard this phenomenon characterized as ``flow'' and I'd say that's a good term for it.
Techniques and materials: wire, nylon, glass; peyote, possibly ladder stitch. Collection of the artist.
