By 8am I had completed the lighthouse painting, and the brightening morning encouraged me to move on to other subjects, such as the gerardia in the upper center of the frame (likely Purple Gerardia or similar)...aaaaaaaaand despite (or perhaps because of) the more stable perch on the Lighthouse Point rocks, by 8:37 I sent the paints flying.[1]

I don't think I actually ever painted the flower—it certainly doesn't appear in any of the sketchbooks that had other art from this trip—but instead settled for rescuing the pans, and I do remember how happy I was that I found them all—and then making a bunch of reference photos for later.[2] It was the last day, and we both wanted to make the long trek home.
[1] They do have magnets stuck to the bottom of the pans to prevent just this sort of problem, but obviously they don't work very well: the double sided tape only sort-of adheres the magnet to the pan, and the magnet itself doesn't really grip the metal box adequately. These poor paints! Besides my usual carelessness [ok, impatience] in mixing colour right in the pans, thereby contaminating them, they've suffered sand incursions from various beaches—I think I've finally gotten most of that from a similar accident 2–3 years ago gone—and now dirt, which fortunately didn't stick as readily.
[2]Really, I should finish off that lime green notebook with some flower paintings from this trip. There's only about 3–4 pages left;)
